It’s time for a culture change in how we view our bodies as we age. Going beyond the current obsession with fitness and fighting off decline, we can develop a higher awareness of our bodies as treasured archives of our experience and as vibrant vehicles for self-discovery and creative expression. This presentation explores this new level of body consciousness, illustrating how to draw upon the emotional and spiritual wisdom our bodies have to offer right up until our last breath.

PAT SAMPLES, M.A., M.F.A., a writer, international speaker, and transformational educator, is the author of BODY ODYSSEY: Lessons from the Bones and Belly (October 2005).

She is also the author of six other books, including Daily Comforts for Caregivers, and has written widely on health, aging, and human behavior. Samples is a past editor of The Phoenix, a wellness monthly. She has written for Associated Press features, airline magazines, Today’s Health and Wellness, American Medical News, Women’s World, Minnesota Monthly, SecondJourney.org, U. S. Catholic, The Lutheran, and many other publications. She speaks and gives workshops on conscious aging, body wisdom, caregiving, improvisational movement, and creative living.

Samples has directed an inner city arts education center and has also worked in organizations providing services to older adults. She has master’s degrees in creative writing and human development. She teaches writing courses for local universities and in community locations.

In her writing, speaking, and teaching, Samples draws on her experience working and volunteering in health care, social services, ministry, and the arts. She helps people recognize and draw upon their own wisdom, including the wisdom of their body, to reveal, celebrate, and revise the stories they live by.

More than 300 organizations and events have hosted her keynotes and workshops, including state and national conferences on caregiving and aging, Area Agencies on Aging, wellness organizations and expos, creativity and writing conferences, Alzheimer’s Associations, Catholic Charities, Lutheran Social Service, senior centers and residences, churches and ministry groups, social work and nursing organizations, women’s organizations, and many more.

Samples is actively involved in leadership roles in the American Society on Aging, the National Center for Creative Aging, and the Minnesota Creative Arts and Aging Network. She lives in Brooklyn Center, a Minneapolis suburb.

Books will be available to purchase for book signing.
