James will provide gathering evidence of both the individual and social impact of the convergence of science and spirituality...You will gain new insight into how the science of peace is fundamental to personal health, societal health, and peace on earth.

Unprecedented times are pushing us forward to embrace a new paradigm for humanity: a new consciousness of peace emerging as a science of change which has concrete benefits and hugely practical and measurable outcomes. Governing systems conditioned by fear, threat, and the relentless pursuit of competitive advantage are collapsing into new forms of cooperation, new methods for change, new ways to transcend prevailing worldviews of self and other oppression.

Science has a great role to play in helping us to make rational choices based on the best evidence gathered across disciplines, from biology to ecology. For the first time in history, we can demonstrate how we are being moved from fragmentation to wholeness by an emerging collective will that questions the notion that war, aggression, and survival of the fittest is an inescapable reality.  To understand the Science of Peace one must also understand the science of stress, manipulation and oppression.

The breakdown and irrationality of collapsing worldviews may capture our attention but we must also look at the evidence of a whole new mindset and worldview that is rising out of the ashes of crashing worlds : at the interface of science and spirituality comes a new center of evolutionary purpose and creativity. In almost every sphere of human activity a higher more integrated consciousness is beginning to show us the way to fundamentally transform dysfunctional paradigms.
 
Transformation is an irreversible change of state and not simply a linear change. We have begun to study both personal and collective transformation and the findings are deeply affirming of the relevance of spiritual practice and the underlying unity of the great wisdom traditions.

Both the science of peace and of transformation herald deeply practical insights and models that will guide us though a time of unprecedented breakdown into a new center of prodigious human creativity and planetary civilization.

Biography James O'Dea's

James O’Dea is the President of the Institute of Noetic Sciences and a native of Ireland.  The Institute of Noetic Sciences is a non-profit membership organization founded in 1973 by astronaut Edgar Mitchell.

The Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) conducts and sponsors research into the potentials and powers of consciousness, including perceptions, beliefs, attention, intention, and intuition, and is committed to educating the general public about this research.  The Institute is dedicated to scientific rigor, open-minded approaches, diversity of perspectives and multiple ways of knowing.  It is not a spiritual sect and does not promote political causes.

The activities of IONS include scientific studies, publications and educational media, and community building.  The 200-acre campus in Petaluma, California includes a Retreat & Learning Center which hosts workshops, retreats, and educational activities dedicated to nurturing personal transformation, health, and interconnectedness with the environment.

James O’Dea joined IONS in April 2003. Previously, he spent ten years as the director of the Washington DC office of Amnesty International, where he testified before Congress, met with two U.S. presidents and numerous foreign heads of state and government leaders, and represented Amnesty International to the State Department, the White House, and the World Conference on Human Rights.  Subsequently, he spent five years as executive director of Seva, a non-profit organization dedicated to international health & development issues in Latin America, Asia, and on American Indian reservations.  Seva is a Sanskrit word meaning service.

During the past five years, James created and currently co-leads a series of dialogues funded by the Fetzer Institute called "Compassionate and Social Healing."  The dialogues bring together leaders and activists in a variety of fields related to human rights, peace, and social reconciliation initiatives.

James lived and worked in Turkey and Lebanon, and witnessed civil conflict and massacres, which influenced him deeply.  He brings to IONS a sense of urgency about the issues the world currently faces, as well as an Irish sense of humor and love of language.

James is a member of Ervin Laszlo’s World Wisdom Council.  This council is a coalescing of Religious and Spiritual Leaders, Political Leaders, Non-Profit Organizations and Civil Society banding together to formulate a structure and support system that furthers the realization that we are one family of humankind.  The council offers a platform for humanity to recognize we are all spiritual beings with the possibility of living life in harmony and balance considering all.
