Description: This is yet another way to look at our pivotal time in history--the tipping point--from the view of collective consciousness. In that spirit, review this important video from a highlight plenary presentation at the IONS 2005 Conference. Then be ready to add your point of view.

In still yet another form of describing the world at the tipping point, this powerful video by Ervin Laszlo says we are at a time in human history as a bifurcation as in all changing epochs in the history of human civilization. Life support systems and the human system are out of sync and we have to bring these two together. We have to move to a more integral rationality, thinking in terms of wholes, where we know ourselves intuitively a part of the universe. We have to integrate our sense of responsibility for ourselves with all of nature.

“I believe all crisis is caused by rapid, unreflective technological innovations, but I believe it is a crisis that does not have technological solutions; it has cultural solutions…spiritual solutions. The solutions lie on the level of consciousness. We can heal by shifting our consciousness. We need to heal, because the planet, in a metaphorical way, is coming apart at the seams. Humanity is coming apart…nature is coming apart. We have got to put it together. And naturally it is together…as a natural system it is integral. It is whole. We must stop disturbing it, we must act like we are a part of it. No problem in doing that because there are solutions…”

We have got to develop a set of other beliefs…familiar to IONS…moving our beliefs to a whole different level, moving from knowing to consciousness, moving toward a collective sovereignty, moving our thinking in terms of living systems and not just mechanical systems. Ervin Laszlo shows a systemic view of the changes of history and introduces an evolutionary model for future systemic change.

"The current paradigm-shift in science takes us from a mechanistic universe not just into an incomprehensibly strange 'what the bleep' universe but into a meaningful world where all things are connected, and all evolve coherently: to a 're-enchanted cosmos.' At the crucial 'tipping point' of society this shift can change the thinking and the behavior of a critical mass in society, moving us from a trajectory leading to deepening crisis and chaos, toward sustainability, solidarity, and peaceful co-evolution.
